Story telling through photography-Great for Scrapbooking

Telling a story through photography can be a fun yet tricky task.  First off, you need to decide what the event is about and then capture certain moments that occur making your story interesting.  It is similar to writing a story just.... no words, only images.  There are 3 different types of pictures to take for your storyboard.

1. Take a photo that will tell your audience all about the event.  This can be best done with a wide-angle shot.  This can be done with your regular point & shoot camera with the widest setting or if you own a SLR camera such as my camera, Nikon D80, then you have many options of lens you could use. Such as this one for example, the 52 mm super wide angle lens.

2. After you have told your plot of the story, then it is time to introduce your characters.  This can be done through traditional portrait style photography.  You always want to get the entire group together.  Then separate families, or maybe certain groups of friends.  Now just because this is a "traditional" style of photography does not mean each image has to be boring.  Try to portray each person's personality, it will make for a far more intriguing storyline.

3.  Once we know all the characters you would like to include in your story, next is to really define them.  This can be done by candid and fun shots.  For example, if it is a child's birthday party then you might catch the birthday boy/girl rubbing their hands together right before opening a huge present.  Or if your at a family reunion, maybe you catch someone's expression from the "joker" of the family.  Stay on your toes and be aware of your surroundings because you never know when this moment will occur.

Lastly, after you have all your photographs, arrange them in a way that will tell your story without words.

If you are using a digital storyboard there are a couple of free ones that you can download from http://coffeeteaphotography.blogspot.com/2010/04/coffeeshop-web-storyboard-5-pics.html

Or you can get really cool scrapbooking materials like these items.  The fun thing about scrapbooking is that you get to really be creative with the colors and extra decorating that is involved.
